This drawing is a study for Ellenrieder's first large altarpiece commission, an altarpiece for the recently-built St. Bartholomew the Apostle Parish Church in Ortenberg (Baden-Württemberg), Germany (architect Hans Voss, 1824). The altarpiece itself was completed in 1827.
